  1. What is Thrill the World?

A world-wide simultaneous Thriller dance! It was inaugurated in 2006 by Ines Markelle as a one-off project for her friends in Toronto; the following year, she decided to open it to anyone who wanted to do a local event, with herself as 'international coordinator' of events.

2010 is the fourth year that Thrill the World has been an international event.

  2. Have you done the Thriller dance before in Portland?

Yes! This is the fourth year we've organized Thrill the World in Portland. in 2007, we held it at Holocene; in 2008, at the derby skating rink at Oaks Park; last year, Thrill the World was in Pioneer Square immediately following the end of the Portland Zombie Walk.

  5. How do we learn the dance?

You can find instructional videos on youtube under "Thrill the World lessons", and at thrilltheworld.com... or you can come to one of our practices!

  6. How hard is it to learn?

It takes about two to three hours to learn. Through trial-and-error, we've learned a couple of different ways to teach it that make the dance pretty easy to learn. Also, Ines Markelle (Thrill the World founder) has created some step-sheets that break the dance down into individual movements as well as separate sections. These cues are really helpful in learning the dance.

Plus, you can come to multiple practices - as many as you want!

  7. Can we dance at Thrill the World if we haven't gone to any of the practices?

Yes. Please learn the dance ahead of time, though. Generally, space to dance is somewhat tight and we all do better if we're doing the dance together. Also, please email us at ttwpdx@gmail.com and let us know if you are going to dance with us even though you haven't attended practice - the more we know roughly how many people are going to dance with us, the more we'll be ready to set the stage on the day of the dance!

  8. Is it free?

We request a donation of five dollars from participants. All money raised goes to SMYRC, the Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center on NE Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard in Portland. We're grateful to everyone who donates; SMYRC is an organization whose mission is near to our hearts.
